Winter Car Storage in Ontario: Where to Keep Your Car Until Spring

If you’ve got a summer car, a classic or a second vehicle you won’t be driving until spring, the hard part usually isn’t the winter. It’s finding the right winter car storage while you wait it out.

The driveway means months of snow, ice and salt spray from the road. The street can mean tickets and tow trucks when the plows come through. And if you’re heading south for the season, there’s one more worry: you won’t be around to keep an eye on it.

Here’s how to pick the right kind of car storage, how to get your car ready for a few months off, and where to find car storage at Vaultra in Welland, Sault Ste. Marie and Hamilton.

Why use winter car storage?

A car that’s parked for the season doesn’t need to be out in it. Storing it somewhere else does a few things for you:

  • It stays off salted roads. Even parked at the curb, a car picks up salt and slush from passing traffic, and that’s what eats at the paint and underbody.
  • You get your driveway back. One less car to shovel around, and more room for the cars you actually drive in January.
  • You skip the street parking question. Many Ontario cities limit overnight street parking in winter, so check your local rules before you leave a car on the road.
  • It’s ready when you are. Come spring, your car is right where you left it, not buried under a snowbank.

Drive-up unit or outdoor parking: which one fits?

There are two common ways to store a car, and the right one depends on the car and how you plan to use it.

How to get your car ready for winter storage

A little prep before you park it means a much easier start in spring. Here’s a simple checklist:

  1. Wash it, inside and out. Get the salt and grime off the body and underneath, then let it dry fully before you store it.
  2. Clean out the cabin. Take out food, wrappers and anything that could attract pests over a few quiet months.
    Add fuel stabilizer.
  3. Then drive for a few minutes so it works its way through the system.
  4. Change the oil if it’s due. Fresh oil is easier on the engine than old oil that’s been sitting all winter.
  5. Set the tire pressure. Fill to the level on the sticker inside the driver’s door to help prevent flat spots.
  6. Look after the battery. Disconnect it, or take it home and keep it on a battery maintainer.
  7. Skip the parking brake. Use wheel chocks instead so the brakes don’t stick after months in one spot.
  8. Cover it up. A breathable car cover keeps dust off without trapping moisture.
  9. Call your auto provider. Ask how your coverage works while the car is in storage and off the road.

No. Winter is the busy season, but you can store a car whenever you need the space, like when you’re between homes or have more cars than parking.
